1971 marked the early stages of establishing Tierra with Rudy Salas on lead guitar and lead vocals, Rudy “Bub” Villa on saxophone, flute, and vocals, David Torres on key- boards, trumpet, flute, and synthesizer, Albert Bustillos on drums (soon replaced by Kenny Roman), and Steve Salas on lead vocals, bass guitar, and valve trombone. Conrad Lozano would eventually replace Steve Salas on bass guitar. Tierra started performing in 1972 and released their first album “TIERRA” in 1973 on 20th Century Records which eventually led to their big hit “Together” in 1980/81 on Boardwalk Records. The band was named “Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Group” by Billboard, Cashbox, Record World, and BRE (Black Radio Exclusive), being the first Hispanic musical act to have four songs on the National Charts and two songs simultaneously in the Top 100. Tierra has shared the stage with top acts including Chicago, War, Tower of Power, The Whispers, Malo, Poncho Sanchez, Franky Beverly and Maze, AWB, Tina Marie, Zapp, Kool and The Gang, Jose Feliciano, El Chicano, Rose Royce, Los Lobos, Freddie Fender, comedians Paul Rodriguez and George Lopez, and had the honor of backing up the Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown, just to name a few. Tierra has performed on numerous prestigious venues including The American Music Awards, American Bandstand, Carnegie Hall, The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion as well as touring worldwide. This year is Tierra’s 50th Anniversary and they are continuing the legacy that Rudy Salas nurtured since day one, under the leadership of Rudy “Bub” Villa (the only surviving original founding member) along with Victor Cisneros, Jeff Lewis, Roger Rivas, Tony Banda, Will Rize Rivera, Augustin Mario Quiroga, Joe Mendez, and Phillip Ruiz. The band is stronger than ever and their music continues to please their fans across the nation.
